Removing Oil Stains from Concrete

Pressure washing an oil stain makes it lighter for about a week. Here is why that happens, what actually lifts oil out of concrete, and the three common fixes that leave you worse off.

Why pressure alone will not shift an oil stain

Concrete looks solid. It is not — it is porous, and oil soaks into those pores rather than sitting on top of them. Pressure only reaches the surface, so blasting an oil stain removes the thin layer on top and leaves the rest underneath, which is why the mark looks lighter for a week and then appears to come back.

It has not come back. It was never fully removed.

What actually works

Oil has to be lifted out of the concrete rather than knocked off it, and that means a product plus time.

StainWhat it needs
Fresh oil, still wetAbsorb it first — cat litter, sawdust or a commercial absorbent — before anything else. Do not hose it, that spreads it
Recent, soaked inA degreaser worked in with a stiff brush, left to dwell, then hot rinse. Often takes two passes
Old and setA poultice — an absorbent paste that sits on the stain for hours and draws the oil back out as it dries
Transmission fluid or coolantTreat like oil, but expect the colour to have dyed the concrete. Some shadow may remain

The honest expectation on an old stain in a garage floor or driveway is a large improvement rather than a disappearance. Anyone who promises a perfect result on a ten-year-old oil patch without seeing it has not seen it.

Garage floors have their own problem

A garage floor is the same concrete with two differences. There is no rain to weather the stains, so they accumulate exactly where they land, and there is nowhere for the rinse water to go.

That second point is why garage floors are often quoted separately. The job needs either a way to control and extract the water or a low-water method, and a crew that turns up planning to hose it out into your driveway has not thought about it.

The mistakes that make it worse

Stopping the next one

If the same spot keeps staining, the vehicle is the problem rather than the concrete. Beyond fixing the leak, a sealed driveway or garage floor resists absorption considerably — oil sits on the surface long enough to wipe up instead of sinking in. Worth pricing if you are cleaning the same patch every year.
